NZ PAYE Take-Home Pay Calculator

Enter your gross salary or wage and see exactly what lands in your bank account each pay. Includes the latest PAYE brackets (effective 31 July 2024), ACC earners' levy, KiwiSaver contributions, and student loan repayments.

How this calculation works

Uses the NZ PAYE tax brackets effective from 31 July 2024: 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, and 39% above $180,000. ACC earners' levy is 1.39% on earnings up to $139,384. Student loan repayments are 12% on income above $24,000. KiwiSaver is deducted from gross pay at the selected rate (employer contribution is additional, not deducted).

When to use this

  • Understanding your actual take-home pay before house-hunting
  • Calculating how changing KiwiSaver rate affects your deposit saving rate
  • Comparing job offers with different gross salaries
  • Budgeting for mortgage repayments based on after-tax income

Important limitations

  • Does not include employer KiwiSaver contribution (additional 3%)
  • Does not account for independent earner tax credit (IETC) or other tax credits
  • Assumes standard tax code — secondary income uses different rates
  • Does not include Working for Families or other benefits

Common questions

Why does my effective tax rate look lower than my marginal bracket?

NZ uses progressive tax brackets. Only the portion of your income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. So someone earning $85,000 has an effective rate around 21-22%, not 30%.

Is the ACC levy included in PAYE?

ACC earners' levy (1.39%) is collected alongside PAYE but is a separate levy. We show both individually so you can see the full picture.

Does KiwiSaver reduce my tax?

No. KiwiSaver is deducted after tax from your gross pay. It doesn't reduce your taxable income, but it does reduce your take-home pay.
